Source: AI Careers for Students: How Class 9–12 Learners in India Can Build a Powerful Future in 2026
This is one of the most important career questions of our time, and the answer has changed significantly in the last 24 months.
A recent research study by News24Media (April 2026) compiled data from the India AI Impact Summit 2026, CBSE’s April curriculum revisions, the India Skills Report 2026, and the IMF’s 2026 Skills Development Note to answer exactly this question. Here are the key findings:
1. The opportunity gap is real and enormous. 82% of Indian employers in 2026 cannot find employees with AI skills. Fresher AI/ML engineers are already earning ₹14–20 LPA — 3–5× the average non-AI fresher salary.
2. This is not only for Science/Engineering students. The study identifies 10 high-demand AI career paths, including AI Product Manager, Responsible AI Specialist, NLP Specialist for Indian languages, and AI in Healthcare — many of which are accessible to Commerce and Humanities students with AI literacy.
3. CBSE’s own curriculum confirms this direction. From this academic year, AI and Computational Thinking are compulsory at the Class 9–10 level under the NEP 2020 framework.
4. The practical roadmap for Class 12 students: Complete a recognised AI certification (Google AI Practitioner, AWS AI, or IIIT Bangalore’s Diploma via upGrad). Build 2–3 real portfolio projects solving Indian problems. Participate in the YUVAi Global Challenge. Choose colleges with dedicated AI or Data Science programmes.
